Malling

Blogworld Saturday later.

Malls. Every city has them, and Manila is no exception. I don't know exactly how many there are but I've been to lots since quite a number of them are just a half-hour's ride from where I live. One mall that I visited on a regular basis is the Glorietta Complex. I used to go there often when I was still working in the corporate world. I'd have a meal there, drink coffee, go window shopping on my own during weekdays because it isn't too crowded.

We bring the kiddies there too, sometimes. It's big, it's cool, and has lots of establishments. It's especially crowded on weekends (as most malls are) and one time I even lost my younger daughter there for a few minutes (though it seemed like forever). She has this independent streak, which I both love and hate, and it was that daredevil nature of hers -- in addition to my inattention -- that separated us. Happily, quick action by the mall's security personnel reunited us.

Some regular-day pics of that particular mall (borrowed from www.arrakeen.ch/asia2005/phildec04.html)

This afternoon, however, part of the mall's appearance changed. Drastically and tragically so.

An explosion tore through the section known as Glorietta 2. Rumors abound as to the wherefore's of the tragedy. But all I feel now is sorrow for the victims' families. Only a few weeks left until Christmas (which is a big thing here), and their families are short one member because of one insane afternoon. My friend Houseband00 was near that place when it happened, and I'm thankful he's okay.

I know hating is the last thing I should be doing right now, but I can't help it. I hate how crazy and fucked up the world can get. I hate the fact that such things can happen so close to home. I hate feeling apprehensive this way.

Pinoy bloggers are quick to share this sad news. You'd be the second blog I read today (in a matter of 5 minutes) to post this. Are there casualties? Sowee, did not read the whole article. Nice to see you back.

Maybe hate isn't the right word. Frustration, anguish, disappointment, sadness, all of thee above?

Okay, so maybe hate is the right word. I hate the direction our world is going in. Maybe it's just my wild imagination but I see visions of a dark, scary planet in our future.

That ain't good.

I saw this on Yahoo news this morning and immediately thought of you. I'm glad you and your family are okay, and I'm appalled that there are people who think this is the best way to make a political statement.

This is terrible... the news never seems to be able to escape from delivering stories about some sort of catastrophe each day... Glad you're okay, though

I'm truly sorry about what had happened. The world is going crazy with these fanatics.

However, I'm glad that HB is okay though. Gee ... Guess it'll take time for Glorietta 2 to be reconstructed again.

Photo: Eight fatalities and about a hundred injured, last I heard.

Kiyotoe: For once, I hope your vision is wrong.

Ian: Thanks. I agree. But there's just no room for sanity in fanaticism.

Terra: Thanks. Natural disasters are bad enough, but willful destruction of lives and property for things that make no sense...just doesn't make sense.

Kyels: I hope they reconstruction G2 soon, get things back to normal.

Sorry Lizza - only just spotted this after leaving usual inane comment on latest blog.
Yes, get back to normal asap.

If people have to be crazy, I wish they'd be good crazy like you.

Lizza - I'm so glad you're OK. The world is indeed a crazy and frustrating place. So sad.

Thanks, Mims. There's still a lot of goodness and beauty around despite the crap.

I don't understand the world sometimes. Why people would set out to hurt others (if this was one of those times). Glad to know you're okay. I used to feel apprehensive too --- after 9/11 -- but decided that it didn't suit me and that I'd rather be apprehensive about muggers and thugs than the real bad guys... at least muggers are brave enough to attack one person at a time, face to face (well, sometimes).

I understand your point perfectly, Burton. Not that I'd ever want you coming face-to-face with a mugger or anything like that.

And HB was actually there.

~shudder~

it puts everything in a new perspective, when someone you know and love in whatever little measure it's possible to love someone on ethernet, comes to so close to this kind of random violence.
